Ito Yukari（伊東 ゆかり） is a prominent Japanese pop and Kayokyoku singer whose career spans more than 70 years, beginning in her early childhood.
Since her debut at age 11, she specialized in covering Western pop hits. However, her career reached a major turning point when she transitioned to the Kayokyoku style. She achieved a massive breakthrough with "Koyubi no Omoide" (小指の思い出 - Memory of the Little Finger), a song about an adult love affair, which became her signature masterpiece.
Her beautiful, sophisticated alto voice belongs to the same tradition later associated with singers such as Karen Carpenter and Mariya Takeuchi. This timeless vocal quality is exactly why she is hailed as Japan's "Queen of Pop."
Released in 1968, Yukari Deluxe is neither a standard studio album nor a simple "greatest hits" collection. It is a record that captures the charm of a vocalist who was also internationally acclaimed at the Sanremo Music Festival in Italy.
In Japan at that time, it was rare for singers to create concept albums consisting solely of new original songs. LP content was typically composed of A-sides and B-sides from recent singles, outtakes, and covers of Western pop hits.
Side A features "Koyubi no Omoide" from the previous year, other contemporary single releases, and "Kawaii Onna" (可愛い女), a track specially written for her by Dan Kosaku (弾 厚作), the pen name of Kayama Yuzo (加山 雄三).
The tracks lined up on Side A are essentially follow-ups to the success of "Koyubi no Omoide." It is said that at the time, she actually disliked singing these erotic, Latin-tinged "Mood Kayo Ballad" songs.
However, her true strength—honed since the days she sang for U.S. occupation forces at military camps as a young girl—lies in American and European pop music.
Side B consists entirely of covers of contemporary Western pop hits. In both selection and arrangement, it unfolds a sophisticated world distinct from Kayokyoku. Her vocals on this side sound even more vibrant than on Side A.
The arrangement of The Beatles cover "Day Tripper" is based on the version by Sérgio Mendes & Brasil '66.
"And I Love Him" features lyrics adapted to a female perspective and continues the tradition of female vocalists covering the track, most notably Esther Phillips.
The arrangements on Side A were handled by Morioka Ken-ichiro (森岡 賢一郎), a pioneer who integrated beat-heavy arrangements into Japanese pop. Side B was arranged by Shoji Osamu (東海林 修), who would later be known alongside Tomita Isao (冨田勲) as a synthesizer pioneer. Both were young, talented composers and arrangers affiliated with the powerhouse talent agency Watanabe Productions, known in Japan as "Nabe-Pro" (ナベプロ), which helped shape the era’s sound.
